The Banning Unified School District proudly hosted its annual Language Celebration on Tuesday, May 13, at the Banning High School Performing Arts Center, recognizing students across elementary, middle, and high school for their achievements in multilingualism and English language development.
The celebration brought together families, educators, and students for an evening of cultural pride and academic excellence. The event featured two student performances that highlighted the District’s rich diversity. Central Elementary School’s Dual Immersion Kindergarten classes, led by Mrs. Uribe and Mrs. Molina, performed an Argentine Folklorico dance titled “La Chacarera.” Nicolet Middle School’s Mariachi Palominos followed with musical renditions of “Deep in the Heart of Texas” and “Las Mañanitas.”
In total, 47 students were honored for being reclassified as Fluent English Proficient, meeting rigorous criteria that demonstrate high levels of English proficiency. These students represented Cabazon Elementary, Hemmerling Elementary, Central Elementary, Banning Independent Study School, Nicolet Middle School, and Banning High School—with the majority of reclassified students coming from Nicolet Middle School.
The event also celebrated students on the Seal of Biliteracy Pathway, which recognizes those who are on track to earn the prestigious Seal of Biliteracy by high school graduation. This year, 34 fifth-grade students and 13 eighth-grade students met key pathway milestones, including writing essays in both English and Spanish and completing community service requirements.
Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, Mr. Johnny Baker, served as the master of ceremonies, announcing student awards throughout the evening. As names were called, students eagerly ran up to the stage to receive their certificates and medals, beaming with pride. Families filled the auditorium, creating an atmosphere of joy, celebration, and community support.
Superintendent Terrence Davis shared the purpose behind the District’s efforts:
“Our goal is for students to become biliterate, bilingual, and bicultural—ultimately earning the Seal of Biliteracy at the district, county, or state level. That’s why we have these pathways in place—to ensure students are on the right track. We check progress at key points in 5th and 8th grade, and we are proud to honor those who have met those benchmarks tonight.”
The Language Celebration is a cornerstone of Banning USD’s commitment to promoting equity and celebrating linguistic and cultural diversity. Through programs like the Seal of Biliteracy Pathway and English Learner services, the District continues to foster an inclusive learning environment where every student can thrive.
